How to Take an “Always On” Approach in your Career

I get it. We’re all busy right. A recent survey put Australians as one of the hardest working nations You have a role you find super challenging, you are working long hours have outside of work commitments to exercise, socialise, parent. You have a great boss and feel rewarded by your current company, looking for a new job, even if you had the time, hasn’t crossed your mind.

That is totally cool.

But don’t let your resume and LinkedIn profile gather dust or you may just miss out on something you didn’t even know you were looking for.

The chances of the most incredible role for you being vacant at the exact same time you decide you want to look for a new role is actually quite slim.

Here are 4 simple tips to make sure you remain across the market even if not actively in the market

  1. Dedicate one commute a week to checking your LinkedIn messages and connecting to/ following people/companies you are interested in. When recruiters use LinkedIn there is a filter for ‘more likely to reply’, these are the candidates we will reach out to first, no one likes to be ghosted; not even recruiters.
  2. Network without ‘networking’ think about how many industry events you could realistically attend in a year and break this down to quarters then commit to going to them. Even if it’s only one a year; who you know not what you know will never be replaced by any AI tool.
  3. Set up a note that is for Achievements – when you get some good feedback at work or awesome campaign results note them down. If that interview comes along you have all your achievements ready to go. It’s amazing how much we forget when we have our heads down in the thick of it
  4. Update your resume every 6 months. Honestly just add it your calendar and do it you will not regret it.

As we all know, when we least expect it is when great things usually happen. I hope these tips help you have a simple toolkit to make sure your perfect fit can find you.
